In Popular Culture

Each line hired their own photographer to document the building of the line and celebrate the company’s efforts. The Union Pacific sent photographer Andrew J. Russell to capture the line from Omaha, while Alfred A. Hart documented the construction of the Central Pacific as it crossed the Sierra. Russel’s stereocards were published as “The Great West Illustrated in a Series of Photographic Views Across the Continent” while Hart’s "Scenes in the Sierra Nevada" depicted the CPRR crossing the mountains. Widely disseminated as stereograph cards, the images achieved a three-dimensional effect when viewed through a stereoscope. The stereoscope combined the left and right views on the stereograph card into one image, which gives the illusion of depth.

[[stamp]]The National Archives of the United States[[/stamp]] - POSTPONED U.S. MARSHAL'S SALE. - U.S. Marshal's Office, Southern District of Georgia.} THE UNITED STATES vs. 12 ACRES OF Land, near Macon, Ga. By virtue of a Writ of venditioni exponas, issued from the District Court of the United States for the Southern District of Georgia, in the above entitled cause, dated March 25, 1867, to me directed and delivered, I will sell at public auction, on the first TUESDAY in MAY next, within the lawful hours of sale, at the Court House in the city of Macon, Bibb county, Ga., certain lots of land near the old steam mill, formerly owned by the Monroe Railroad and Banking Company, Bibb county, State of Georgia, and bounded as follows, viz: Starting from a point (marked by a cut stone) distant thirteen chains, five links and four degrees west of north from the south-east corner of lot thirteen (13) of the Macon Reserve, West of the Ocmulgee river, proceeding on a line parallel to the Macon and Western Railroad track, southwardly seventy chains and eighty links, then (southwardly) parallel with said railroad track for five chains and twelve links, and lastly, north-westward at right angles to railroad track to point of starting, and being four acres, more or less. Also, another piece of land, bounded as follows: Starting from a point West side of lot thirteen (13) of Macon reserve West of Ocmulegee river, distant twelve chains and seventy- five links from southwest corner of said lot, running seventeen chains and seventy-five links northward along said side, then turning forty-two degrees and thirty minutes west of South for thirteen chains, and then forty-seven degrees and thirty minutes east of south for twelve chains, then returning to the starting point, containing eight (8) acres, more or less-the two together containing twelve (12) acres, more or less. Warrant of Arrest The President of the United States of America, TO THE MARSHAL OF THE [[stamp]] THE NATIONAL ARCHIVES OF THE UNITED STATES [[/stamp]] DISTRICT OF GEORGIA---GREETING: WHERAS, An Information hath been filed in the DISTRICT COURT OF THE UNITED STATES for the Southern District of Georgia, on the... day of January in the year 186..., by HENRY S. FITCH, Esquire, Attorney of the United States for said District, in behalf of the United States of America, against Forty three (43) acres of Land more or less with the improvements therein situate lying and being in the corporate limits of the City of Macon Bibb County Georgia, bounded on three sides by Calhoun Hazel and Lamar Streets, and on the other by the Macon and Webster Railroads, being the same as was heretofore deeded by the Mayor and Council of the said City to the so called Confederate States, for reasons and causes in said information mentioned, and praying the usual process and monition of the Court in that behalf to be made, and that all persons interested in said property may be cited in general and special to answer the premises, and all due proceedings being had that the said property mentioned, be condemned and the proceeds thereof distributed according to law: You are therefore HEREBY COMMANDED to attach the said property and to detain the same in your custody until the further order of the Court respecting the same and to give due notice to all persons claiming the same, or knowing or having anything to say why the same should not be condemned as forfeited, and the proceeds thereof distributed according to the prayer of said information, that they be and appear before the said Court to be held in and for said District on the Second Tuesday [[strikethrough]] Fourth Monday [[/strikethrough]] in February next, at 10 o'clock, in the forenoon of that day, if the same should be a day of jurisdiction, otherwise on the next day of jurisdiction thereafter, then and there to interpose a claim for the same and make these allegations in that behalf.
