Scope and Contents

"Zaire's major ocean port, lying 200kms up the Zaire River from the Atlantic Ocean, Matadi is the most important shipment point for goods travelling by rail to Kinshasa. As such, it is the linchpin of Zaire's internal transportation network." [F. Scott Bobb, 1999: Historical Dictionary of Democratic Republic of Congo, The Scarecrow Press, Inc.]. This photograph was taken when Eliot Elisofon traveled to Africa from March 17, 1970 to July 17, 1970.
