Under Secretary for Administration

Tony Edmonds

Director, Facilities Management

Antonio (Tony) M. Edmonds, PE, is the Smithsonian Institution’s director of Facilities Management. Edmonds leads a team of over 1,000 craft, trade, and professional staff providing essential services, operations, and maintenance of the Smithsonian’s facilities and infrastructure. This includes three distinct units: Smithsonian Gardens, the Office of Business Administration and Technical Services, and the Office of Facilities Management and Reliability.

Edmonds is a career facilities-engineering professional and experienced senior executive leader. He earned the Architect’s Distinguished Career Award for his service with the Architect of the Capitol (AOC) from 2017 through 2022, where he initially served as director of the Office of Security Programs, with responsibility for the security infrastructure across the campus. He subsequently served as superintendent of the Library Buildings and Grounds, managing the personnel and facilities supporting the Library of Congress. His service at AOC culminated with his tenure as chief of operations, leading the workforce responsible for the operations and maintenance of the entire U.S. Capitol complex, with over 18-million square feet of building space as well as the Capitol Grounds and Arboretum, the U.S. Botanic Garden, and the Capitol Power Plant.

Before joining the AOC, Edmonds served in the U.S. Navy Civil Engineer Corps, accumulating extensive leadership experience and success in facilities planning, design, construction, and management, as well as sustainability and environmental services. His final Navy assignment was as director, Facilities and Environmental for Navy Installations Command, where he was responsible for a $3.5 billion annual budget supporting all worldwide Navy installations. He previously served as commanding officer, Naval Facilities Engineering Command Washington, leading a 1,500-member team providing over $1 billion in annual construction and facilities support for nine military installations in the National Capital Region. He also commanded Naval Mobile Construction Battalion Three, leading 700 Seabees on deployment to Iraq and Afghanistan to provide construction, transportation, and facilities support for U.S. and allied forces.

Edmonds graduated from the University at Buffalo with bachelor’s degrees in industrial engineering and English. He earned master’s degrees in environmental engineering from the Pennsylvania State University and National Security & Strategic Studies from the Naval War College. He completed the Executive Development Program at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School as well as Seminar XXI through the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
