Under Secretary for Education

Anne Taylor Brittingham

Director, Smithsonian Office of Educational Technology

Anne Taylor Brittingham is the director of the Smithsonian’s Office of Educational Technology (OET). In this role, she leads and manages an Institution-wide educational technology program that embraces and addresses the needs of more than 300 Smithsonian educators and external stakeholders across the nation.

Brittingham oversees the strategic direction for OET, aligning its goals, objectives, budget and staff performance to the Smithsonian strategic goals and objectives. She works with educational institutions, professional and private associations, and foundations to make Smithsonian resources integral to the education process and ensure Smithsonian digital education resources are available to schools across the nation. She is reimagining the Smithsonian’s Learning Lab, an interactive education platform that brings Smithsonian objects and resources into the classroom and connects PK–12 teachers and students to the Smithsonian in relevant and culturally responsive ways.

Brittingham works as a partner with education-focused non-profits, federal agencies and other relevant organizations on grant funding and partnership opportunities that raise the profile of the Smithsonian as a key asset in solving national education challenges. She believes in collaboration in developing a strategic vision for how to best integrate cutting-edge digital tools, foster partnerships and support learning access for diverse audiences across the nation.

Previously, Brittingham was the deputy director for education and responsive learning spaces at The Phillips Collection. In that role, she led the design of a bold and inspired education and learning strategy that increased equitable access and meaningful engagement with the museum’s collections, exhibitions and archives.

Previously, she was chief engagement officer at the Speed Art Museum, and she has held roles at institutions, including the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the Frist Art Museum and the J. Paul Getty Museum. She holds a master’s degree in art history from the University of Virginia and a bachelor’s degree in classical studies from Wake Forest University.
