1976: A Year in the Collections

In 1976, the United States celebrated the bicentennial of the Declaration of Independence. The Apple Computer Company was established on April 1, 1976, by Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, and Ronald Wayne to sell the Apple I personal computer kit. In May, 1876: A Centennial Exhibition, a recreation of the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition in 1876, opened in the Arts and Industries Building. The National Air and Space Museum opened July 1, 1976. Two Viking Landers, launched in 1975, touched down on the surface of Mars in 1976. In November, Jimmy Carter defeated incumbent president Gerald Ford in the presidential election.
