Historical Note

In the early 1970s, the central Office of Public Affairs of the Smithsonian Institution handled public affairs and special events of the National Museum of History and Technology (NMHT). In 1972 Rebecca Bean left that office to become first Special Events Assistant and then Special Events Officer for the Office of Public Affairs of NMHT and served until 1975. Bean was succeeded by Geraldine B. Sanderson as Special Events Officer, 1976-1977, with a change of title to Public Information Officer, 1978-1981. In October 1981, the name of the Museum changed to National Museum of American History (NMAH). In 1982 Mary W. Dyer was appointed Public Information Officer and reported to the Director, 1982-1983. In 1984 the Office of Public Affairs was placed under the Department of Public Programs, and Dyer continued to serve, 1984- .
