This type of cemí, known as a cabeza de Macorix, was developed on the island of Hispaniola. In design and spiritual function, it is related to three-corner stone cemis. This one probably represents a Native leader who was venerated after death.

Taíno (Chican Ostionoid) cemi carved to represent a human head, AD 800–1500, San Pedro de Macorís Province, Dominican Republic. Stone Purchased in 1941 from A.E. Todd. (20/3511)



Este tipo de cemí, conocido como cabeza de Macorix, se desarrolló en la isla de La Española. En diseño y función espiritual, est´ relacionado con el trigonolito. Este probablemente represente a un líder indígena quien fue venerado después de morir.
