Leviathan’s crew was organized into three departments. The Deck Department was the smallest division with 100 to 120 members. It included the captain and his senior and junior officers, responsible for commanding and navigating the vessel; the purser and his staff, responsible for the ship’s accounts and administration; the surgeons and radio operators; various men to look after the vessel’s boats, rigging, and gear; and the lookouts and able-bodied seamen.
