1924: A Year in the Collections

Explore items in the Smithsonian's collections related to 1924. In January, the first celebration of the Winter Olympics was held in Chamonix, France. The Summer Olympics followed later in the year in Paris, France. On April 6, four U.S. Army Air Service airplanes left Seattle, Washington, to carry out the first round-the-world flight. Two of the four airplanes completed the journey 175 days later on September 28. On June 2, Congress enacted the Indian Citizenship Act, which declared all Indians born in the United States as citizens of the country. Also in 1924, Edwin Hubble was able to show that the universe is composed of many galaxies, of which the Milky Way is just one.

The Smithsonian's collections represent our nation's shared history, art from across the globe, and the immense diversity of the natural and cultural world.
