Beginning in 1964, he composed music for dozens of motion pictures, including In the Heat of the Night (1967), The Wiz (1978), and The Color Purple (1985).
Jones arranged and produced some of the most iconic music of his time and once told Rolling Stone magazine that he was “blessed to work with every major music star in the history of America.” He collaborated with a wide range of artists, including Duke Ellington, Aretha Franklin, Lena Horne, Michael Jackson, and Frank Sinatra. Jones earned 28 Grammys, two honorary Academy Awards, an Emmy Award, and a Kennedy Center Honor.
Chuck Stewart, who is remembered for his dynamic images of musicians, jazz artists in particular, photographed Jones during a rehearsal for the Broadway musical Free and Easy (1959).
