Ghetto Invitational Championship Trophy

This trophy was awarded to the winning team of the Ghetto Invitational tournament of Washington, D.C. that started in 1971. The basketball tournament was organized by the Ontario Lakers youth club founder Walter C. Pierce, hosted at Gonzaga High School and promoted the unity of urban youth sports teams. The Ghetto Invitational Tournament took ownership of a label that was otherwise imposed upon inner-city neighborhoods and sought to celebrate the talents of young athletes. At over 3 feet high, this trophy was one of the biggest expenses for the tournament, at times leaving Pierce in debt. However, the trophy and the tournament had the invaluable effect of instilling a sense of pride in young African American athletes and children in underrepresented communities, proving there was no shortage of champions in the inner city.
