This trophy was awarded to the Finest Player of the Ghetto Invitational tournament of Washington, D.C. The basketball tournament was organized by the Ontario Lakers youth club founder Walter C. Pierce, hosted at Gonzaga High School and promoted the unity of urban youth sports teams. The Ghetto Invitational Tournament took ownership of a label that was otherwise imposed upon inner-city neighborhoods and sought to celebrate the talents of young athletes. These trophies were often the biggest expense in such tournaments, at times leaving Pierce in debt. However, the trophy and the tournament had the invaluable effect of instilling a sense of pride in young African American athletes and children in underrepresented communities, ‘as a sample of excellence’ that was in no shortage in the inner city.
