Scope and Contents
The map depicts a bird's-eye view of Shimoda-machi and nearby villages. Included are topographical features, the 1786 census report (number of households and populations by sex), location of the chief administrator's office, and locations of the coastal defense guard posts. The map is oriented with North to the right.
Mounted on the backing along with the map are a photographic view and a photomechanical print of "Tojin Okichi in Her Palanquin," by Tsuyao Segawa of Shimoda. Tojin Okichi ("foreigner's mistress") was the mistress of Townsend Harris.
The map is dated as "Meiwa san inu no toshi" (the third year of Meiwa, the year of the dog).
