The exhibition presents 150 musical instruments as well as art objects that depict musicians and their instruments. On view are stringed instruments, drums, horns, whistles, rattles, bells, gongs, and thumb pianos. Made by a number of sub-Saharan African peoples, the instruments often employ human and animal forms. The sculptures on view are carved from wood or ivory or cast from bronze.
