Kalabari Ancestral Screens: Levels of Meaning
November 11, 1988 – January 29, 1989
The exhibition explores the traditional function, history, and formal qualities of sacred screens used to commemorate the most important ancestors of southern Nigeria's Kalabari people. On view are 11 bamboo and wood "duein fubara" (ancestral screens) and carved figures both attached to screens and freestanding. The screens, made in the 19th century, range in height from 3 to 5 feet.
The screens are on loan from the British Museum, London; the Pitt Rivers Museum, Oxford; and the Glasgow Museums and Art Galleries.
