Images of Power and Identity

On view are over 100 works of African art (wood, ivory, metal) selected from the museum's permanent collection. Grouped according to the major geographical and cultural regions of Africa south of the Sahara, these objects were chosen for their inherent beauty and spiritual power. Included are a 19th-century Bamum royal figure, a 20th-century palace door carved by the Nigerian artist Olowe of Ise (ca. 1875-ca. 1938), a beaded figure from the Bamum peoples of Cameroon, and two 13th- to 15th-century terracotta figures from Mali.
