The diversity of art styles among the Igbo people of southeastern Nigeria are illustrated by more than 100 objects on view in the exhibition, the first comprehensive survey of the subject. Objects dates from the 19th and 20th centuries and are divided into three thematic sections: —needs and responsibilities of the individual (objects include stools, carved figures with body painting, staffs and other hand-held prestige items) —the family (sculptured house-posts and figures found in family compounds) —the community (large-scale display figures and headdresses associated with masquerades)

An 11-minute audio-visual slide presentation complements the exhibition. Organized by the Museum of Cultural History, University of California, Los Angles, the traveling exhibition presents objects from museums and private collections in the U.S., Canada, Europe, and Nigeria.
