On view are 45 sculptures in an exhibition that explores and illustrates the traditional use of the human image in the art of the Mali's Bamana people. The focus of the exhibition is on the cultural and historical background of sculpture used in connection with a Bamana initiation association called "Jo." Produced for more than 500 years, some of this work is considered to have a monumental quality, making it among the most significant in African Art.

Organized by AfA with guest curator Kate Ezra of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the exhibition opens there Aug. 20.
