On view is a kinetic sculpture Church Ede by artist Sokari Douglas Camp. The sculpture depicts a bed for a wake with mourning women at either side fanning the deceased. The sculpture serves as a memorial to the artist's deceased father.
The sculpture is part of the exhibition Echoes of the Kalabari: Sculpture by Sokari Douglas Camp, which closed Jan. 29, 1989. Sokari Douglas Camp is a contemporary Nigerian artist, now living in London, who creates large semi-abstract figurative sculpture from steel and other materials. Born in Buguma in the Kalabari region of southern Nigeria, Camp draws inspiration for her works from Kalabari festivals and ceremonies.
