Several hundred works made by artists from the Mangbetu, Azande, and other peoples of northeastern Zaire, includes sculpture, pottery, musical instruments, basketry, jewelry, and furniture and are drawn from objects collected on an expedition by mammalogist and photographer Herbert Lang and ornithologist and artist James Chapin.
A 15-minute film made in Zaire in 1989 is shown continuously in a theater within the gallery.
This exhibition is organized and sponsored by the American Museum of Natural History in New York.
