    This gourd and woven fiber turtle is an inexpensive toy for local children but also a source of income as something that can be sold to tourists.

    Description

    Turtle with a pyroengraved gourd shell and woven matting sewn onto the shell to form the head, feet and bottom.

    Provenance

    Unknown artist, Harare, Zimbabwe; acquired under unknown circumstances by Mildred A. Morton (born 1942?), Falls Church, Va., in Harare, Zimbabwe, January 1995; donated to the National Museum of African Art, Washington, D.C., 2000.
