Even objects as tradition based as gourd vessels are influenced by new ways and products. This gourd vessel has taken the form of an imported teapot. The maker stitched in a spout and added a metal handle.

Description

Spherical gourd teapot with square metal handle on top, round lid with knob and fiber, and spout attached with fiber.

Provenance

Unknown artist, Kampala, Uganda; purchased new by Mildred A. Morton (born 1942?), Falls Church, Va., in Kampala, Uganda, 1993; donated to the National Museum of African Art, Washington, D.C., 2000.
