Basketball Hall of Famer Shaquille O’Neal played in the NBA for nearly two decades. A record-setting center at Louisiana State University, he was the first pick in the 1992 NBA draft, joining the Orlando Magic. Rookie of the Year for the 1992–93 season, he spent four years with Orlando before signing with the Los Angeles Lakers, where he won three consecutive NBA championships. In 2004, O’Neal won another championship with the Miami Heat. Today “Shaq,” as he is commonly known, works as an NBA analyst, entrepreneur, and spokesperson for the Boys and Girls Club of America.
From 2001 to 2006, ESPN commissioned Rick Chapman to photograph top athletes for the ESPY Collection, named for the sports network’s annual awards. He photographed O’Neal in West Hollywood, California.
