The attorney and legislator Samuel Griffin is best known for his role in changing the course of the Revolutionary War. In December 1776, while serving as aide-de-camp to General Charles Lee, Griffin distracted enemy troops by leading several hundred militia and Virginia regulars into Mount Holly, New Jersey. His diversion allowed General George Washington to cross the Delaware River, which resulted in the Continental Army’s first major victory at the Battle of Trenton.
Born into privilege, Griffin had studied classics and law prior to admission to the Virginia bar. He was twenty-four years old when the Scottish portraitist Cosmo Alexander painted him in Williamsburg, Virginia, where he later served as mayor (1779–80) and engaged in the slave trade. As a Federalist, Griffin represented Williamsburg in the Virginia Assembly (1786–88). He also served in the first three Federal Congresses (1789–95) but missed a quarter of the roll calls votes.
