Educational Notes
All aboard! The 12.5 ton Pioneer was built in Massachusetts in 1851 and then purchased by the Cumberland Valley Railroad (CVRR). This railway served parts of Pennsylvania and Maryland. The engine was used to pull passenger cars and became especially important during the Civil War because of its use in transporting Union soldiers and supplies. The Pioneer is powered by steam pistons and is known as a 2-2-2- locomotive because of its wheel configuration. From 1901-1961, the Pioneer was used as an antique at various shows and exhibits, and it was donated to the Smithsonian Museum of American History in 1963.
