Description

Charcoal sketch on paper. American soldiers and tanks make their way forward over trenches and through shell-torn earth. An observation balloon floats on the horizon at left. A jumble of barbed wire entanglements line the foreground.

The work's title, "Over the Top," refers to soldiers rising out of the trenches and attacking over open land, which exposed them to enemy fire. This dark landscape illustrates the machines and technology used in World War I.
