Educational Notes

Business is business, right? You might be surprised to find out that business transactions are different all across the world. Simple conversations can be taken very differently based on the person’s country of origin. For example, everyone pauses when having a conversation. Pauses allow the other person to communicate, show importance to certain words and phrases, and simply allow the speaker to catch their breath. In Arabic countries, as well as on the continent of North America, pauses between single words are not too long. However, in Japan, pauses between words can change a words intended meaning. The Japanese culture is comfortable with silence and often takes long pauses in conversations. This is seen as a type of awkward silence in European and North American cultures and can cause embarrassment and insecurities in the speakers.
