Illustrated title page depicts three balloons ("Enterprise," "Resolute" and "Discovery") preparing for an Arctic flight under a night sky with stars and mountains. A ship is at the ice floe edge and teams of men are shown in the foreground using coal burners to produce gas for the balloons. One uses a flag to send semaphore messages back to the ship and another holds a telescope. Other men and sled dogs gather in the background. Signed "Alfred Concanen lith". Lithography company: "Stannard & Son"
Publisher's advertisement on verso of page 7 gives melody incipits for songs in: Madame Favart : opera comique in three acts / English adaptation by H.B. Farnie ; music by J. Offenbach.
