Summary
This model kit allows the purchaser to build an accurate model of the Space Shuttle Columbia. Columbia was the first space shuttle to fly in space (STS-1 mission, 1981). It completed 27 missions before it disintegrated during reentry on the STS-107 mission in 2003.
Manufacturers developed this model kit in partnership with the Smithsonian Institution for sale in museum shops and elsewhere. The package stresses the accuracy and educational value of the product. Model kits like this are marketed to appeal to youth and hobbyists interested in the technology of space exploration.
Valerie Neal, a National Air and Space Museum curator who assisted in the development of this product, donated it to the National Collection in 2003.
