    Description

Linda Richards (July 27, 1841 – April 16, 1930) is generally considered the first professionally trained nurse in the United States. Richards graduated in 1873 from the New England Hospital for Women and Children in Boston. The Hospital was founded in 1862 for the exclusive use of women and children, and in 1872, Dr. Susan Dimock organized the nursing training program. Five student nurses were in the first graduating class. Linda Richards was the first to complete the required one year of courses and clinical work, and the first to receive a diploma.
