Summary
This bronze medal was part of the National Medal of Science award given to Dr. Charles Stark Draper by President Johnson in 1964. Established by Congress in 1959 as a Presidential award, the National Medal of Science recognizes outstanding individual achievements in the physical, chemical, biological, mathematical, engineering, behavioral or social sciences. As set forth in the accompanying citation, Dr. Draper received the award "for inumerable imaginative engineering achievements which met urgent national needs of instrumentation, control, and guidance in aeronautics and astronautics." Dr. Draper donated a collection of his awards, including this medal, to the National Collection in 1974.
