Summary

This medal was part of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Distinguished Public Service Medal award given to Dr. Charles Stark Draper in 1967. The award is granted to any American citizen who is not a federal employee and whose "meritorious contributions produced results which measurably improved, expedited or clarified ... scientific progress ... and other efforts related to the accomplishment of the mission of NASA." Dr. Draper received the award for his work in developing the guidance, navigation, and control systems for the Apollo program and his university teaching in the scientific and engineering fields. Dr. Draper originally donated this medal to the National Collection in 1974.
