Summary
In anticipation of a possible emergency landing or mission abort, each spacecraft was equipped with a series of emergency/survival rucksacks. Each rucksack contained equipment to protect the astronauts and assist the search and rescue teams in locating their position. This package of sea-dye marker is one such aid to location packed in Survival Rucksack #2. Upon opening and shaking the powder into the sea, it forms an orange trail on the ocean surface, making it easier to spot the astronauts' raft.
This item was used for training and was not flown. It was transferred to NASM in 1978.
