Artist
William E. Norton, born Boston, MA 1843-died New York City 1916
Luce Center Label
William E. Norton lived in Boston but spent a great deal of time painting on the coast of Maine. Maine Coast has broad brushstrokes and little detail, suggesting that Norton created it “on the spot” as a study for a more finished work such as Sailing Ship, which was probably painted back in his studio.
