In May 1990, American musicians and staff from the Smithsonian’s Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage traveled to Ukraine to participate in the second International Folklore Festival. Performers included Alison Krauss and Union Station, Tejano legend Santiago “Jimmy” Jimenez Jr. and Jessie Castillo, Philadelphia tap dancer LaVaughn Robinson, New Orleans’s Young Tuxedo Brass Band, and a group of Native Hawaiian hula dancers and chanters from Halau ‘O Kekuhi.
