Katharine Hepburn was seventy-four and Henry Fonda seventy-six when they began filming On Golden Pond (1981), a movie about the joys and pains of growing old. The two Hollywood icons had 129 feature films between them but had never worked together. In fact, they had never even met. The plot had many opportunities to become a sentimental cliché of senility and old age, only to be rescued by seasoned professionals giving life to two strong characters. The popular film won Oscars for Hepburn and Fonda; it was her fourth Best Actress award and his first Best Actor win, in the final role of his career. (Hepburn’s Oscars are on view on the museum’s third floor.)
