Halle Berry, born 1966

Halle Berry began her career as a model and transitioned to acting in the late 1980s. Director Spike Lee cast her in her first movie role in Jungle Fever (1991), a film that focused on racism and interracial relationships. Since then, Berry has established herself as one of Hollywood’s best-paid actresses, taking on a wide range of roles, from dramas to action movies.
Jérôme De Perlinghi photographed Berry in France at the Deauville Festival of American Film, where she was promoting Introducing Dorothy Dandridge (1999). In the film, Berry played Dandridge, the first African American woman to be nominated for an Oscar for Best Actress. Unlike Dandridge, who did not win, Berry herself became the first—and as of 2016 the only—woman of color to win the Academy Award for Best Actress, for her performance in Monster’s Ball (2001).
