A mesmerizing presence on the screen, Greta Garbo further intrigued filmgoers with her reclusive lifestyle and unwillingness to engage with the press. In 1925, the Swedish-born Garbo arrived in Hollywood in the company of Sweden’s principal film director, Mauritz Stiller. Stiller’s time in the film colony was short-lived, but Garbo quickly emerged as MGM’s hottest “property.” Following her American debut in the silent drama Torrent (1925), Variety declared, “This girl has everything—with looks, acting ability and personality.” She enhanced her standing as a top box office draw in nine subsequent silent films.
MGM bosses fretted that Garbo’s accent might be a liability, but she made the transition to sound with ease in Anna Christie (1930). Memorable performances followed in the dramas Grand Hotel (1932) and Camille (1936) as well as the comedy Ninotchka (1939). However, the failure of a second comedy, Two-Faced Woman (1941), prompted Garbo’s abrupt retirement from the screen.

En 1925 la actriz sueca llegó a Hollywood con el principal director de cine de su país, Mauritz Stiller. Stiller no duró mucho en la meca del cine, pero Garbo pronto se convirtió en la “propiedad” más cotizada de MGM.
