In 1948, Time billed Hollywood actor Gregory Peck, then thirty-one, as “the average man on the flying trapeze.” Unpretentious by nature, Peck enjoyed projecting the image of the typical family man earning a living for an adoring wife and two young sons. Yet acting was his passion, and he strove to further hone his skills. Already he was one of the most valuable male talents in the business, largely because of, Time reported, “his good looks, which invest any role he undertakes with a certain idealized, legendary quality.” Later, his acting skills alone would win him a Best Actor Oscar in 1963 for his supreme performance as Atticus Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird (1962).
