Born Chapel Hill, Tennessee
Nathan Bedford Forrest was born into a poor Tennessee family. When the Civil War began, however, he had become wealthy by trading enslaved people. As a Confederate cavalry officer, he showed tactical brilliance at Fort Donelson, Vicksburg, and Chickamauga, among other battles. He became known as the Wizard of the Saddle. At Fort Pillow, Tennessee, he led his men into a battle against hundreds of Union troops. After many of their African American opponents had tried to surrender, Forrest’s men nevertheless executed approximately 70 percent of them.
Pictured here shortly after the Civil War in civilian clothing are Confederate Brigadier General Nathan Bedford Forrest and his military staff. Forrest went into the railroad business, ran a plantation, and in 1867 reportedly became the grand wizard of the newly founded Ku Klux Klan.
