Object Details

Description

This is a square–shaped blown and molded glass jar that has a round glass stopper. The white oval baked enamel label is marked FERR LACTIC. The jar would have contained Ferrous Lactate, also known as Iron Lactate.
Iron lactate was used as an astringent, a tonic, and a styptic to stem blood loss from wounds. This jar is illustrated on page 30 of the Squibb Ancient Pharmacy Catalogue.
