    Caption

A gold cord suspends this round, wooden pendant necklace. On the pendant’s front, embossed initials (“BMP”) and the number “84” encircle the letter “A”, while its back bears an engraved cross. Though the pendant’s markings remain a mystery, the necklace belonged to Ethel L. Payne (1911-1991), a longtime Washington, DC resident who became known as First Lady of the Black Press for her pioneering journalism career.
