Summary
This desk stand commemorates Project Mercury, the first U.S. manned spaceflight program. There were a total of six launches of Mercury manned spacecraft. The first in May 1961 carried Alan Shepard in his historic sub-orbital flight. After one more sub-orbital mission, John Glenn in February 1962 became the first American to orbit the Earth. There were three additional orbital missions in 1962 and 1963.
