Summary
This is a bronze reproduction of the Congressional Gold Medal awarded posthumously to Dr. Robert H. Goddard in 1959 for his pioneering work in rocket development from the early 1900s until his death in 1945. His contributions included the building and launching of the world's first liquid fuel rocket in 1926. The Congressional Gold Medal is the highest expression of national appreciation for distinguished achievements and contributions, and each medal honors a particular individual, institution, or event.
Goddard's wife Esther, who promoted her husband's legacy after his death through lectures and by editing and publishing his papers, gave the medal to the National Collection in 1963.
