    Caption

Carved, colorfully-painted wood forms this conga drum’s tall body. Hide stretched across the top of the drum creates its head, held taut by a rope wound around pegs that pierce the hide and jut out of the drum’s sides at an angle. The rope runs the length of the drum, which tapers into two tiers at its base. Knots secure the rope around the lower tier. The drum is painted orange with maroon and black accents on a carved middle section festooned with diamonds in a checkerboard pattern, asterix-like designs, and vertical lines. Maroon painted triangles encircle the tier below the carving and stylized “X’s” ring the base, also in maroon paint.
