Summary
Chemical desalter packets made by the Van Brode Milling Company were designed to be used in conjunction with the desalinization bags. The desalter kits in the survival rucksack contained a desalter process bag, desalter tablets, and bag repair tape. The desalter bags are plastic with a filter at the bottom. Approximately one pint of seawater is put into a bag and one tablet added. After one hour, drinking water may be taken through a valve on the bottom of the bag.
This bag was not flown. NASA transferred it to the Smithsonian in 1978.
