Caption
This nine-square block quilt has four large blue and white checkboard blocks interspersed with five white blocks. The white blocks are stenciled with a feather-like design reminiscent of Delftware ceramic patterns in blue ink or paint. The outline of the curvy shapes of this design have been hand-quilted with off-white thread, giving the appearance of applique. The remainder of the quilting is done following a diagonal line through the corners and centers of each of the squares.
After moving to Washington, DC following World War II, Ira Blount mastered dozens of artisanal crafts. His love for crafting, learning, and community engagement would endure over the course of his long life and career.
