    Frederic Edwin Church, American, 1826–1900

    Description

Landscape and botanical sketch showing a view of two birch trees in the woods of Vermont during Autumn. Visible just beyond a bush's red and yellow leaves at lower right, the trunks of these twin white-barked trees are rendered in great detail as they extend out of view. Shadows of the bush's leaves and one of the tree's branches are deftly rendered upon their white bark. In the background, a mass of green and orange undergrowth forms a busy screen of vegetation, while patches of blue sky peak through the branches along the upper margin.
