Object Details

Collection Photographer

Schiedt, Duncan P., 1921-2014

Collection Citation

Duncan Schiedt Jazz Collection, 1900-2012, Archives Center, National Museum of American History

Scope and Contents

Contains a substantial amount of research material either created by or collected by Duncan Schiedt. The photographs he took and items he collected provided materials to support his own interests as well as reference requests of authors, editors and the media for educational and entertainment purposes. The materials are divided into ten subseries. Subseries one contains material Schiedt referred to as the historical photographs and negatives which form the largest portion of this series. Subseries two is a group of photographs maintained by Schiedt as a file on musicians, including individual artists and bands, who primarily played jazz, although they represent other musical genres as well. Schiedt also maintained a group of materials relating to subjects such as bands, instruments, festivals, Gennett Records, and collectors' events which are found in subseries three. Subseries four is a group of photographs created by Roscoe Allen. Photographic materials including both prints and negatives relating to individual instrumentalists dating from 1938 to 1990 are found in subseries five. Subseries six contains negatives of jazz musicians collected from John Miner. Subseries seven is negatives documenting Indianapolis theaters dating from 1935 to 1956. Theater and vaudeville negatives dating from 1910 to 1945 are in subseries eight. Glass plate negatives of performers are in subseries nine and are undated. Lastly, subseries ten is a group of negatives relating to both African American and white jazz artists and festivals. Researchers interested in more detailed information about the photographs and negatives in this series should refer to the index the Jazz Archive of Duncan Schiedt, which is found among materials in series one.
