Scope and Content Note

Contains the more than 5,000-page manuscript originally collected by Charles B. Anderson and given to Levin. The Fake Book, musical lead sheets intended to help a performer quickly learn and perform new songs, includes the basic melody line, basic chords and occasionally lyrics of over 5,000 songs. Featured composers within the book are Louis Armstrong, Irving Berlin, George Gershwin, Hoagy Carmichael, and Duke Ellington among many others. Charles B. Anderson also collected and passed on to Levin a list of the composer names of every song Bessie Smith recorded as found in Edward Brooks' the Bessie Smith Companion: A Critical and Detailed Appreciation of the Recordings. The Fake Book is arranged by page numbers with a partial index of the Bessie Smith materials at the beginning.
